Dr Sally Fitzpatrick of the University of Newcastle was awarded $100,000 for the Innovation Research Grant project titled:

A randomised controlled pilot study of an online intervention for families and friends affected by a suicide attempt.

Building on previous work in suicide prevention and with carers, this research will develop a new online intervention for family and friends of those who have attempted suicide. It will also integrate a social networking site (Breathing space) with the new program. The overall goal of the current study is to pilot procedures and obtain data on the acceptability of integrating the new online program and social networking site together. The pilot will determine the feasibility of a definitive randomised control trial (RCT) of the effectiveness of the two new programs.

The research aims to:

• Ascertain if families and friends will engage with an online support program and social network application tailored to their needs and experience;
• Examine the benefit to families and friends from an online support program and social network application tailored to their needs and experience.

In a statement, Dry Fitzpatrick explains:

“I am passionate about translating research into effective and accessible programs for Australian families impacted by mental ill-health and suicide. The Suicide Prevention Innovation Grant provides a valuable opportunity to develop targeted support to families and friends who care for others after a suicide attempt. This group is underrepresented in our service system and yet provide most of the practical and emotional support to those impacted by suicide attempt. This grant allows us to support those who support others.”
