Primary Investigator: Professor Emily Lancsar

The Australian National University was awarded $99,856 for the Innovation Research Grant project titled:

Hospital to Community Supports to Prevent Suicide Re-Attempts.

The relationship between hospital-community continuity of mental health (MH) care and emergency department re-presentations on suicide and self-harm behaviours is not well understood.

Evidence is greatly needed to demonstrate existing variation in MH care path selection, effectiveness of selected paths, and the overall impact on returns from the provision of an optimal MH care path for youth experiencing self-harm and suicidality.

The aim of the project is to create an evidence-based model to inform priority setting, decision making, resource allocation, and service development in achieving better care and better outcomes.

In a statement, the team explains:

“Receiving the research grant is so important for me because our project will generate strong evidence and practical recommendations for acute and community healthcare providers, mental health practitioners, youth experience self-harm, and their caregivers to make informed decisions with respect to personalised care path selections. Above all, it will benefit youth experiencing self-harm, for which their healthcare journeys will be optimised to reach their full potential.”
